Promised Land

In Evanston, Wyoming, Claire encourages a musically-gifted boy to continue playing the guitar, despite the objections of his mother, who doesnt want him to follow the same path that killed his father.

While the Greene family visits Claires great Aunt Mooster whos celebrating her 100th birthday in Pueblo, Colorado, Russell encourages a man to step forward and take action against his employer for dumping toxic waste at a local landfill site.

The Greenes take a detour, courtesy of Dinahs navigation, and wind up in Roswell, New Mexico, at the A-Lee-Inn Cafe, a hangout for UFO-seekers, where they encounter eccentric people who gather every year for an alien-sighting event. Meanwhile, Russell learns the secret of an astronauts disappearance.

The Greenes arrive in Pennsylvania, where as a teacher, Claire is confided in by a teenage girl that she was pregnant but suffered a miscarriage. Claire and Russell emphasize with the teen as they recall a similar loss of their own years earlier.

While recovering from the fire that destroyed their trailer, the Greenes have a run-in with some scam artists travelling through Chicory Creek. Meanwhile, Hattie is swept off her feet by a mysterious man, and Josh gets a haircut.

The Greenes are on their way to Cheyenne, Colorado when they stop to help a woman, Ellen Boller whose car has broken down on the road. Hattie becomes concerned when she notices bruises on the womans young daughter, Sarah. Russell and Claire confront the mother and learn that shes running away from an abusive husband -- who happens to be the town sheriff (Sheriff Boller). While returning the girls doll, Russell witnesses the abuse through the window, breaks into their house and rescues the woman and her daughter. Sheriff Boller keeps the Greenes under house arrest in their trailer until Russell returns his wife and daughter. Meanwhile, Ellen arranges for her sister-in-law Pauline to get proof of the abuse in the form of a videotape in order to prosecute. Along the way, we learn that Sheriff Boller has a long history of fear and intimidation to his credit. Boller intercepts a note and foils their plans.

Excited about their upcoming anniversary and having Claire all to himself, Russell embraces her tightly to dance. This causes Claire to wince and later in the shower she discovers a painful lump in her breast. The following day Claire slips away to a local womens hospital alone. There she becomes fast friends with Rachel, a young woman she meets in the waiting room. Rachel becomes really shaken after learning she must face the mastectomy of her left breast. Everythings changed for her now. Shes scared. Angry. Rachel decides to break things off with David, her fiancé. Claire consoles her on their drive home. Once at the trailer park, Claire gently finds the words to tell Russell of her own ordeal. At the hospital with Russell for the first time, Claires mastectomy proves inconclusive. She must undergo a biopsy. The entire family is told of what Claire is facing. Josh and Dinah are quietly alarmed.

While in Washington, Dinah and Hattie get lost in a bad part of town on the way home from the market and stumble across a teenage girl named Allison sleeping on the streets. They bring Allison back to the trailer to learn that she is a runaway who has been separated from her brother Tommy through the bureaucracies of the local childrens services agency. Russell and Claire contact an overworked social worker named Linda Paxton to help reunite Allison with her brother. Russell pays a visit to Tommys last foster parent, Barbara Manning, who informs him that Tommy is dead. Russell and Claire break the new to Allison. Allison convinces Josh to take her to Barbara Manning to find out how Tommy died. Barbara tells Allison that her brother took his life. She tries to fill in some of the missing pieces but is finally at a loss to explain what led Tommy to take his life. Allison runs off and hitches a ride to the rail overpass where Tommy committed suicide.

The Greenes go to Post Falls, Idaho to place Josh in a special institute for the blind, and visit some old friends from North Carolina, Ned and Eileen Bernhart. Ned sets Russell up with an interview at the company where he works, Post Falls Furniture. Russell seems a shoe-in for a machine room supervisor position. Though Hattie reminds him about his ""directive"" from the angels, Russell finds a way to rationalize the idea of settling down, perhaps buying a house. Russell is thrown for a loop when he realizes hes been passed over for a younger, less qualified applicant. Then Ned gets the news that hes been ""downsized"" out of his job despite a stellar record of job performance for nine years. Russell convinces Ned to consult a lawyer about possible age discrimination. Though inexperienced, Joel Corwin, fresh out of law school, is the right man for the price. Eileen is more concerned about losing the four months severance package Neds been offered.

With the help of Russell and Claire, a woman forces a young boy to face his anti-semitic acts by telling him about her own familys past. Meanwhile, Josh faces a similar situation when he dates a girl whos Jewish.

Russells job hauling lumber separates him and Dinah from the rest of the family who then fail to arrive at an appointed meeting site.

The social worker who accused the Greenes of child negligence, faces the same charge when her own son runs away from home with Nathaniel, saying he blames her for the death of his twin brother.

Russell is troubled when Claire chooses to go to the aid of her ex-boyfriend Rod, instead of attending an important family function. Claire is dismayed to discover that not only has she jeopardized her relationship with her husband, but she may have made things worse for Rod as well.

Josh wrestles with the ardent feelings hes having for his new girlfriend, and must make a decision about where their relationship is heading. Meanwhile, a pregnant Claire battles morning sickness.

Russell accidently acquires the reputation of a spirtual healer after a cancer-stricken woman observes him saving a little girl from drowning, and his unavailing efforts to convince the townspeople otherwise prove disastrous.

Russell is appalled to learn that his friends son, is popping steroids to improve his athletic ability and when concern for the boy forces Russell to intervene, he discovers the lengths some fathers will go to see their children succeed.

A Thanksgiving visit with Claires sister and her husband is cut short, after Claire announces her unexpected pregnancy and the childless couple doesnt take the news well.

Hattie hastens to the aid of a dying childhood friend, who asks an alarming favor that Hatties unsure shell be able to grant. Meanwhile, Claire is rushed to the hospital when she suffers from severe abdominal pains.

The discovery of a seemingly valuable Purple Heart medal at a flea market has Nathaniel searching out its owner, but hes surprised to learn that it was given away by a troubled woman whose father won it in the war.

Nathaniels father is released from jail on a weekend pass to surprise his son on his birthday, but circumstances may stop the reunion from ever taking place.

Hattie goes undercover in a home for seniors to investigate possible elder abuse, after Dinah and Josh tell her about their suspicions.

Russell and Claire help a man whose supposedly deceased wife returns to see their daughter after disappearing years earlier.

Claire awaits the arrival of the baby, and Joe is released from jail and joins the family. Meanwhile, Josh, Hattie and Dinah head to Oklahoma City for the memorial service.

Nathaniel is kidnapped by the woman whose family died because of Joes reckless driving. The crossover starts on Touched by an Angel S05E02 Saving Grace (I).

Russell and Claire attempt to restore a mansion and the lives of the family who call it home, including a girl whose mother wont recognize her health problems. Meanwhile, Dinah struggles with her own health when she becomes bulimic.

Josh sets out on the road by himself to help a troubled friend. Meanwhile Russell accidently gets mixed up with a con artist.

Josh is recued by a homeless boy after he is attacked by a group of thugs, prompting Russell and Claire to locate the childs alcoholic father with hopes of repairing the shattered family.

Russell becomes the object of a young drug addicts affection when he volunteers at a local youth shelter, while L.T. is between a rock and a hard place when his gangster friends give him an ultimatum - help with a drug deal or live in fear.

L.T.s estranged father, Lawrence Sr. shows up and announces hes dying of prostate cancer. Meanwhile Russell goes to the doctor for an overdue physcial.

With Lawrences death imminent, Russell tries to teach L.T. about forgiveness. Meanwhile some parents oppose Claires plan to help pregnant teens.

Russell risks losing a wealthy volunteer at the teen shelter when he tells her to stop throwing money around and explains how the money could really help the kids. Meanwhile, Dinahs boyfriend pressures her to spend the night with him.

Nathaniel naively uses a racial slur and must deal with the ramifications with help from Russell and L.T.

L.T. dates a white girl, and Margot and her mom deal with their issues.

L.T. finds himself in danger when he witnesses a drug addict selling her baby to a dealer, and wants to get the police involved. Meanwhile, Hattie returns home with big news, and Claire gets ready to big farewell to Josh, whos heading off to college.
